This book offers a clear, historically grounded account of the

Muslim presence in India, showing that Muslims have been

integral to the subcontinent for over 1,300 years. From early

Arab traders and Sufi saints to the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughal

Empire, and the anti-colonial struggle, Muslims shaped India’s

culture, politics, architecture, education, and intellectual life.

The book dismantles the myth of Muslims as “outsiders” by

highlighting their deep civilizational contributions and their

role in building India’s pluralistic heritage.

The book also examines the growing marginalization of

Muslims in contemporary India, especially under rising Hindu

nationalism. It details how laws such as the CAA-NRC, the

revocation of Article 370, Islamophobic media narratives,

mob violence, and state policies have created structural

discrimination. Through case studies like the Gujarat 2002

violence and the Delhi 2020 riots, it shows how exclusion is

becoming institutionalized. Yet, the book also highlights the

resilience and resistance of Indian Muslims from Shaheen Bagh

to student activism, arguing that their struggle is central to

protecting India’s democratic and secular future
